SAMUEL SHORE (c.1847-1912) – Kilgory Ireland
Samuel SHORE’s parents were Samuel SHORE (c.1847- c.1912) and Mary Ann (Marianne) GRIFFITHS (c.1845 -) farmers near Kilgory, in the district of Ballickmoyer, County Laois (was Queens Co). Samuel and Mary married at the Church of Tascoffin, Co. Kilkenny, on the 20th July 1872. The father of the groom was also a Samuel Shore and the father of bride was William Griffith, both farmers in the district. At the time of their marriage Samuel was resident in Killabin (Co. Laois) and Mary Ann resident in Ballysallagh (Co. Kilkenny). Samuel died of a stroke after 17 days of illness, on 2/9/1912 in Kilgory, Ireland. John his son was there as witness.

SAMUEL SHORE (1877 – 1944) – Life in the Eastern Cape
John SHORE (b.1/6/1873), the oldest brother of Samuel and William was destined to inherit the rights to the farm as first born. With memories of the Irish famine of 1879, the struggle between landlords and tenants, and scarcity of work, their parents probably encouraged Samuel and his older brother William to seek their fortunes abroad.
They boarded the ship Norman on the 1st March 1897 in Southampton, England and sailed for the Cape. Both were minors at the time and to ensure few questions were asked, they listed their ages as 26 and 28 respectively. The journey to South Africa would take forty-nine days, arriving at the Cape in April 1897.
The emigration of Irish to South Africa during this period was small, with most being agricultural labourers or small farmers (Harkness, 1931). Irish were also encouraged to emigrate and join the South African Police forces in the mid 1800s.
The Cape Police was established in 1882, with a headquarters in King Williams Town, Kimberley and Cape Town (McCraken, 1991). The name was changed to the Cape Mounted Police in March 1904, a police force unit later joined by Samuel SHORE. The lure to South Africa for the two young Irish brothers, Samuel and William, must’ve been bolstered by the numerous reports of the gold rush in South Africa. Although gold had been mined since the early 1870s, new gold discoveries in the Witwatersrand in 1886 meant South Africa became the single biggest gold producer in the world and prospectors from especially Europe streamed to South Africa. Great Britian wanted its share of the wealth and grew more confident in its demands on President Paul Krugers Transvaal (South African Republic) government. Cecil John Rhodes became premier of the Cape Colony in 1890 and strove to grow and secure the economies of these British Colonies (Anonymous, 2015). Although the signs of the impending Second Anglo-Boer war (a.k.a. South African War 1899 -1902) must have been clear to the brothers SHORE, it did not stop them emmigrating to South Africa. It may even have been one of the many factors that attracted them to South Africa. Their true motivation may never be known.
The brothers eventually settled in the Stutterheim district, where Samuel SHORE, at the age of 25 and working as a black-smith and wagon maker in Cathcart, married the 18 year old Isabella SAUNDERS on Wednesday 12th March 1902 at the St Albans Church, Cathcart. Present as witnesses were William SHORE and Agnes WALLACE.
A year later, Henry SHORE (b. 7/4/1881), Samuel and Wiliams younger brother, followed them to South Africa. He arrived in Cape Town on the 2 July 1903, aboard the ship Nineveh (Aberdeen Line), which was en-route to Sydney.
The 2410 ton Nineveh departed Plymouth on 10 June 1903, with only 10 passengers and N Allan at the helm. These steamers carried saloon and third-class passengers with fares starting at 13 pounds 13s and no permits required to land in South Africa. Henry and fellow passengers travelled third class, while only a Reverend could afford to travel in saloon class.
Henry found work as a shunter in the Railways Department, in Cathcart, probably staying near the Toisie station. Only two years after his arrival in South Africa he was accidently electrocuted and died on the 29th January 1905, at the young age of 23 yrs, and still single. Samuel was present at his death and signed the death certificate.
Later that same year Samuel honoured his young brother by baptising his new born son, William Henry SHORE (b 24/12/1905). At the time, Samuel is listed as a farmer, living at Dohne, 6 km north of Stutterheim. Dohne has a small railway station and community. The adjacent Dohne Research Station on the farm Frachet (farm no 592) became well known for developing the Dohne merino sheep breed in 1939.
Robert Edward SHORE (b.20/12/1882), another younger brother of Samuel and William also settled in the Eastern Cape, residing at 17 Ayliff Street King Williams Town. After the tragic death of his younger brother Henry, Robert boarded the SS Moravian on the 30th June 1905 at the port of London and sailed for the Cape.
He is listed as a draper, aged 27, on the passenger list although he was obviously a bit younger. The SS Moravian was a 2903 ton passenger ship and scheduled to stop at Tenerife and the Cape on the way to Australia with its 73 passengers.
In South Africa, Robert worked as a drapers assistant in King Williams Town, but contracted enteric fever and broncho-pneumonia. He died on 21st March 1906, at the age of 25 and still single. Again Samuel was there as a witness and signed the death certificate. Robert was present at the baptism of his brother Samuels son William Henry SHORE in 1905. The other witness was a S. Shore (still unkown).
A few years later, Samuel baptised his next son Robert Edward SHORE, in memory of this brother.
Older brother William SHORE (1876-1929) met and married Alwine Hermine MULLER (1873-1956), the daughter of a German settler, Karl Joseph MULLER and Marie Emilie ROSS. William SHORE became a farmer in the Kologha Ward, Stutterheim and died 20/10/29 at the age of 52. His death certificate was witnessed by a brother-in-law, S. King ? Muir. William was present at the baptism (1/9/1912) of Samuel SHORE’s daughter Evelyn Ivy SHORE born 12/4/1912.
William SHORE’s wife Alwine survived him by 27 years and died on 7 December 1956. She is also buried in Stutterheim. Her gravestone was erected by her sister.
So with four siblings emigrating to South Africa, only Samuel SHORE left decendants. Nine children, including 6 daughters and 3 sons.
His wife Isabella SHORE (born c. 1884) died on 3.1.1916, at the age of 32, (Frontier Hospital, Queenstown) after six weeks of being ill of septicaemia following a miscarriage. Isabella was buried in the Baptist Cemetery, Queenstown. In his military records her name is mentioned as next of kin and given as Isabella SHAW of Stutterheim and on his death certificate she is named as Isobel.
